Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the largest breast cancer organization in the world and is dedicated to saving lives by preventing and curing breast cancer. Susan G. Komen's mission statement reads "We are committed to achieving our vision of a world without breast cancer." Susan G. Koman supports people with breast cancer through funding global research; providing information about prevention, treatment options, healthy living, and survivorship; increasing awareness about how to reduce risk; making mammograms more accessible; expanding access to quality care worldwide; pursuing new treatments for underserved groups including minority populations under-served by medical services as well as rural communities that often lack adequate health care facilities or professionals. Susan G. Komen has invested over $1 billion since it started operating in 1982. Susan G. Komen for the Cure strives to provide Susan G. Komen-funded researchers with the resources they need to advance research initiatives and make discoveries that save lives.

Susan G. Komen helps support breast cancer fighters, survivors, and those who are currently fighting by providing them access to free mammograms along with the Susan G. Komen's Race for the Cure, a 5k or 1-mile walk event in which Susan G. Komen supports breast cancer survivors and their families in a celebration of hope and encouragement. Susan G. Komen also provides resources to help breast cancer survivors become more self-confident after treatment by providing them with free Recovery Kits containing shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, lip balm, mirror, and brush. Susan G. Komen also provides free health insurance premium payment assistance to those who qualify through Susan Health Program (SHIP). SHIP is open to uninsured individuals of all ages who cannot afford private coverage but earn too much income to qualify for state programs or subsidies that would otherwise cover costs associated with health insurance premiums. Susan G. Komen also provides Susan Health Insurance premium payment assistance to those whose health insurance policies are not accepted but still need Susan G. Komen-covered services.

The average American woman who is today 20 years old has a 1/8 chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime and an even greater chance if she is older than 40. Susan G. Komen for the Cure estimates that over 211,000 Americans were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2013 alone and just under 39,000 died from the disease last year. Breast cancer affects many women each year and the number continues to rise along with costs associated with treatment which makes it one of America's most deadly diseases according to Susan G. Komen. Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a proud supporter of breast cancer awareness and encourages women to take steps each day that can lower their risks of developing this disease, which is why Susan G. Komen created its 5-Step Plan to Breast Health:

1) Annual Susan G. Komen MAMMOGRAMS!

The most effective way to find breast cancer early, when it's easiest to treat. As Susan was being treated for breast cancer, she met other women whose lives had been changed forever by the disease. Susan wanted these women – and all others – to have access to lifesaving screening and diagnostic mammograms under any financial situation., which is Susan's number one priority because 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer in their lifetime!

2) Annual Susan G. Komen SELF-EXAMS

Susan taught Nancy how to do a self-exam and how important it is for women to understand what's normal for their breasts – and what isn't. Susan encouraged her friends to make a habit of doing monthly breast exams as part of their own Susan G. Komen Health & Fitness routine., which Susan talks about during her annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure speeches because 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with Susan cancers!

3) KNOW THE SIGNS AND GO GET SCREENED

That's why Susan encourages all women age 40 and older to get screened regularly by a doctor, internist, or Susan G. Komen Susan Clinic Susan G. Komen Susan provides access to Susan's best doctors and state-of-the-art facilities. If you are uninsured, Susan G. Komen Susan may be able to help cover the cost of your services, because 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with cancer!

4) EAT RIGHT AND GET ACTIVE

Susan's college roommate Nancy convinced her to join a tennis team at their local health club, which ignited a passion for fitness that continues today (Susan walks 10 miles every weekend!), because exercise is one of the best ways to reduce risk factors for breast cancer., because staying active can lower risks!

5) SUPPORT BREAST CANER RESEARCH

Why? Susan started Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fund research that would save lives and lower Susan's risks., because Susan knows how important it is to find a cure!

From Susan G. Komen:

"Susan was a tireless advocate for increasing funds for breast cancer education, screening, and treatment," said Nolasco. "We hope these efforts will help us achieve Susan's dream of a world without breast cancer."
