Behind The Blue Line - The Current Challenges Facing Law Enforcement Today

There are so many challenges that law enforcement officers face today. From the ever-changing technology to the lack of funding, it's hard for them to keep up. And then there's the media - they're constantly under scrutiny and have to worry about their every move being captured on camera. It can't be easy! But let’s take a closer look at some of these challenges in more detail. At Blue Line Heroes, we strive to share our dedication of supporting law enforcement by not only offering a meaningful presence but also serving as a frontline advocate.

Technology

We use it every day, but law enforcement officers use technology on a whole different level. Not only do they have to know what's happening on their own streets, but they also need to be aware of things going on in other cities and states - sometimes even countries! The Internet has made this easier; especially with cloud-based solutions.

Speaking of cloud-based solutions - there is now broad consensus that the future of law enforcement technology lies in the cloud. The move towards security operations in a public, private or hybrid environment has been widespread with all levels and branches across government betting on these high profile contracts like JEDI.

Lt. Gen Jack Shanahan who heads up Pentagon’s Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) said “We can no longer think about information as being contained within an organization; it's something we share across organizations to make us more effective."

The Media

What would we do without the media? Law enforcement officers have to be more careful about what they say when being recorded by cameras or microphones, especially on camera. The slightest mistake can ruin an investigation - or even cost someone their life! However, many people don't understand that words spoken on live television aren't always carefully thought out. Sometimes statements are made in the heat of the moment (for example, before all of the facts are known). When victims die or suffer serious injury during an incident, reporters push for answers right away; however, this doesn't give investigators much time to gather information themselves first. Most tragic events don’t make headlines until after the entire story has been told and every question has been answered.

Funding

Public safety is extremely important, but funding for law enforcement agencies across the U.S. is constantly under fire. There are so many areas that need to be addressed; however, it's difficult to do everything because there isn't enough money to go around. That means tough choices have to be made - like whether or not officers should be patrolling on foot or by car (because cars use gasoline and gasoline is expensive). Sometimes no matter how much a department needs certain equipment, they cannot afford it; however, help may soon be on its way in the form of federal grants administered through state agencies. There is now additional funding designated for law enforcement agencies that are willing to use the money for new technology.

The Job of A Law Enforcement Officer Isn't For Everyone

There's no question it can be dangerous, but the rewards far outweigh the risks for some officers. If you ask most law enforcement professionals what they like about their jobs, they'll talk about how rewarding it is to know that they're making a difference in people's lives. Not only do police officers save people from physical harm, but sometimes from much more serious threats such as alcohol and drug addiction, neglect, and abuse at home - even addiction to prescription drugs!

In conclusion, the current challenges law enforcement officers face today include staying up-to-date on constantly changing technology, being under scrutiny for every move they make, and having to carefully choose where their departments get funding from. However, despite these obstacles, it's hard to deny that law enforcement professionals are making a difference in the lives of others on a daily basis! At Blue Line Heroes, we strive to share our dedication of supporting law enforcement by not only offering a meaningful presence but also serving as a frontline advocate in places like Dearborn, MI as well as nationwide.
